Tips for Resizing Images Well

Resizing an image down (making it smaller) generally preserves visual quality well, since you're simply representing the same picture with fewer pixels. Resizing up (enlarging) is more limited — no algorithm can invent detail that wasn't captured in the original, so enlarged images tend to look softer the further you scale beyond their original size. Locking the aspect ratio keeps your subject's proportions natural; unlocking it lets you fit exact dimensions but can visibly stretch or squash the image, so it's best reserved for cases where a small amount of distortion is acceptable, like fitting a fixed banner size.
