About Image Inverter
This tool inverts every color in an image, producing the classic film negative effect — black becomes white, and every color shifts to its opposite. Adjust the intensity slider to blend between the original and a full negative, with the result updating instantly. All processing happens locally in your browser; your image is never uploaded to a server.
How Color Inversion Works
Every pixel in a digital image is made of red, green, and blue values, each ranging from 0 to 255. Inverting a color simply subtracts each value from 255 — so black (0, 0, 0) becomes white (255, 255, 255), and a color like blue (0, 0, 255) becomes its opposite, yellow (255, 255, 0). This is exactly how physical photographic film negatives work: the film records brightness in reverse, and darker areas of the original scene become lighter (and vice versa) on the developed negative, which is why old film negatives look like a color-swapped version of the final printed photo.
