A Field-by-Field Guide to Common EXIF Tags

Make and Model

The manufacturer and specific model of the camera or phone that captured the image โ€” straightforward device identification.

DateTimeOriginal

The date and time the shutter was pressed, according to the camera's internal clock. This is distinct from other timestamp fields that track when the file was digitized or last modified.

FNumber (Aperture)

The lens aperture at the moment of capture, expressed as an f-stop (like f/2.8 or f/8). A lower number means a wider opening, letting in more light and typically producing a shallower depth of field.

ExposureTime (Shutter Speed)

How long the camera's sensor was exposed to light, usually shown as a fraction of a second (like 1/250s). Faster speeds freeze motion; slower speeds allow more light in but risk blur from movement.

ISOSpeedRatings

The sensor's sensitivity to light at the time of capture. Higher ISO values allow shooting in darker conditions but typically introduce more visible noise or grain into the image.

FocalLength

The lens's focal length in millimeters at the moment of capture, indicating how zoomed in or wide the shot was.

GPSLatitude / GPSLongitude

The geographic coordinates where the photo was taken, present only if location services were enabled on the capturing device at the time.

Software

The name of any software that last modified the file โ€” useful for spotting whether an image has been edited since it was originally captured.

Orientation

A code indicating how the image should be rotated for correct display โ€” this is why a photo taken sideways on a phone still displays right-side up in most viewers.
