About the Tree of Thoughts Prompt Maker
Instead of asking an AI to answer directly, this prompt asks it to simulate several "experts" reasoning through the problem one step at a time, sharing their thinking with the group after each step — which tends to surface better answers on problems where the first approach that comes to mind isn't always the right one. The technique traces back to a well-known single-prompt adaptation of the academic Tree of Thoughts framework, popularized through a widely-shared GitHub prompt. This tool reproduces that core structure exactly, with a few genuinely useful knobs: how many experts, what domain they're experts in, whether they explicitly rate their confidence at each step, and whether to close with a clear final answer. Everything is generated locally in your browser.
How This Differs From Full ToT
Original ToT (Yao et al., 2023)An academic framework that pairs an LLM with actual search algorithms (breadth-first or depth-first search) across many separate model calls — genuinely exploring and pruning a search tree in code, not in a single response.
Zero-Shot ToT (this tool)A single-prompt adaptation that asks the model to simulate that multi-path exploration itself, inside one response — much simpler to use, with somewhat less rigor than the full algorithmic version.
Where it helps mostProblems with more than one plausible approach — logic puzzles, math word problems, debugging, and strategic decisions — where a single straight-through answer is more likely to go wrong.
Where it doesn't help muchSimple factual lookups or anything with one obvious answer — there's nothing for multiple "experts" to meaningfully disagree about.
The self-correction mechanismHaving experts "leave if they realize they're wrong" is the closest this simplified version gets to the original framework's pruning of bad branches — it's the single most important piece of the pattern.
