What Is Bates Numbering?

Bates numbering (also called Bates stamping) is a method of labeling pages with a unique, sequential identifier — typically a short prefix followed by a zero-padded number, like ABC000001 — used throughout litigation, contracts, and other legal document workflows in the US and Europe. Its purpose is to give every single page of a document set a permanent, unambiguous reference, so that any page can be cited, referenced in correspondence, or located again with certainty, regardless of how the documents are later reorganized, copied, or split apart. Because real document productions often span many separate files, numbering conventionally continues across the entire set in a defined order (rather than restarting at 1 for each file) — this tool follows that same convention automatically based on the file order you set.
