How to Use It
- Enter your fixed costs for the period — rent, salaries, insurance, anything that doesn't change with sales volume.
- Enter your variable cost per unit — materials, direct labor, packaging, whatever scales with each sale.
- Enter your selling price per unit. The break-even point in units and in revenue appears immediately.
Two optional fields extend it further if you want them: a target profit (to see how many units get you past break-even to an actual profit goal), and your expected sales volume (to see your margin of safety — how far above or below break-even that volume puts you).
A Quick Example
Fixed costs of $10,000, a variable cost of $15 per unit, and a $25 selling price works out to a $10 contribution margin per unit — a break-even point of 1,000 units, or $25,000 in revenue.
