About the Car Loan Calculator
This calculator works out your monthly car payment starting from the vehicle price, then accounting for your down payment, trade-in value, and sales tax — the pieces that actually determine how much you end up financing, which is usually meaningfully less than the sticker price. It uses standard declining-balance amortization, the method virtually all auto loans use. Below the main result, it also compares monthly payment and total interest across the common loan terms (24 to 84 months) side by side, since a longer term lowers the monthly payment but increases the total interest paid — a trade-off that's easy to underestimate when only looking at one term at a time. Everything is calculated locally in your browser.
Tax & Trade-In Notes
Trade-in tax creditMany US states calculate sales tax on the vehicle price AFTER subtracting your trade-in value, effectively giving you a tax break on the trade-in amount. Not all states do this, and countries outside the US often handle vehicle tax differently (VAT/GST typically built into the sticker price).
Which tax method to pickIf you're not sure which applies to you, check with your dealer's finance office or your local tax authority — the two methods in this tool can meaningfully change the amount financed.
Trade-in valueUse the actual amount the dealer credits you, not a private-sale estimate — dealer trade-in offers are typically lower than what you could get selling privately, but they're what actually applies toward your new loan.
Longer term trade-offA longer loan term lowers the monthly payment but increases total interest paid, and can leave you owing more than the car is worth for longer (being "underwater" on the loan) — the term comparison table is meant to make that trade-off concrete.
What this doesn't includeRegistration, title, documentation, and dealer fees, plus any negative equity rolled over from a previous loan on the trade-in vehicle.
