Data Capacity: The Biggest Practical Difference

A 1D barcode is limited to a relatively small number of characters — typically just enough for a product code or a simple reference number. A 2D barcode, encoding data across two dimensions instead of one, can hold hundreds or even thousands of characters in a similar amount of space. If you only need to store a single lookup ID that points to a record in a database, 1D is often perfectly sufficient. If you need the barcode itself to carry structured data — not just a pointer to a database — 2D is the better fit.

Scanning Hardware and Compatibility

1D barcodes can be read by extremely simple, inexpensive laser scanners that have been standard in retail for decades. 2D barcodes require an imaging-based scanner (or a smartphone camera) that can capture the full two-dimensional pattern.
